Making Sense of the Biopharma Comms Hiring Landscape

Let’s be honest. Yes, there are more biopharma comms jobs emerging, but with the recent spate of layoffs that hasn’t quite relented, the talent pool is large and competition fierce.

On top of that, there are numerous particularities to our profession. What’s up with the title discrepancy between in-house and agency? Why do jobs that say they require 10 years of experience actually fill the role with people who have north of 15? How the heck do you know if you have enough “executive presence” as a communicator, or on the flip side, how do you evaluate it in a candidate?

May T2B Comm Convo with Alma Villaseñor Hembree

On Thursday (yes, THIS Thursday), tune into our May Comm Convo, where recruiter Alma Villaseñor Hembree will dig into those things that aren’t on a website’s careers page or in the LI job description.

All kinds of communicators, and at all career stages, are invited. Whether you're actively thinking about your next career move or just want to know what’s happening within the industry, this Comm Convo will provide at least one new nugget to consider. Click the button for more details and to sign up.

Hot Takes on Community and Connection

All throughout April we’ve been discussing how to create different kinds of connections, even in unlikely places, and the value of community, whether that’s location-based, values-rooted, or shared via some other kind of bond.

Here are some of the highlights from April’s weekly community discussions:

đŸŽšïž Biopharma communicators’ role is critical in articulating and activating CSR strategy (regardless of company/client stage), ensuring that every level of the organization is informed and engaged.

đŸ—Łïž As communicators, we have an opportunity to incorporate social impact work into our companies’ and clients’ narratives.

đŸ€ Take advantage of the long shelf life of your social impact work by partnering with your people & culture and HR teams on how to weave it into talent branding and onboarding.

In our most recent community discussion, we explored nontraditional networking opportunities. Check it out!

April Comm Convo Recap: A Lesson on How to Communicate for Impact

Sarah MacDonald, CEO of Life Science Cares, is constantly inspired by the endless desire to do good that she sees within biopharma. She’s undoubtedly skilled at finding ways to channel this passion into sustainable contributions to better our communities. (And, did you see that LSC recently expanded to Switzerland? How cool is that?!)

During our fireside chat on April 3rd, Sarah noted that as communicators, we’re uniquely positioned “to see all of the moving parts of an organization and to start to really think about
. how can we do more.”

View one of this Comm Convo’s highlights reels (above) on the impact community engagement and supporting social impact initiatives can have on an organizations and its employees.

“I feel a real potential to kind of change what I’m doing. So, I’m still doing traditional news.
I think there’s also the ability for journalists to start questioning what they’ve done and explore new possibilities.”

T2B Community Voices & Insights

This month in Pulse Narratives, we're featuring Shannia Coley from CG Life! Like many of us, Shannia’s journey began outside of the communications field.

After earning a neuroscience degree from Boston University, she started out supporting clinical trials, only to discover a growing passion for communications.

April Pulse Narrative with Shannia Coley from CG Life

🔎 Reflecting on her career shift, Shannia shares, “I had always been interested in communications—especially in an era where misinformation runs rampant. I found that serving as the intermediary, someone who could communicate with both scientists and general public, was work not only enjoyable, but also incredibly important.”

We couldn’t agree more!
